If you stop it right down and use a tripod, can you get a wider depth of focus, or do the optics of a macro lens oblige it to be sharp for only a centimetre or so?
No, stopping it down does improve matters. However, in this case, film and available indoor light were limiting factors. I did use a desk lamp, though.
