While clearing out my work bag, I thought I'd try to start a meme. I call it "The contents of my work bag" - imaginative, eh?

My amazing 12 (at last count)-pocketed bottomless cycle pannier/satchel/laptop bag (Altura Skye Workstation - a fantastic pannier, incidentally) contains, when it has been cleared of crap, such essentials as:

The geeky

  • 1 Powerbook G4 15", Aluminium version, first revision
  • 1 power supply and 1 spare battery for above
  • 2 little plastic domes that screw to the base of the Powerbook to raise the back up
  • 3 DVI->VGA adaptors - hmm, perhaps a little excessive
  • 1 compactflash->PCMCIA adaptor
  • 1 S-video->RCA adaptor
  • 1 pair Apple headphones
  • 1 Victorinox Cybertool
  • 1 Leatherman Micra
  • 1 256MB USB flash drive
  • 1 Q-Be teeny-tiny cube-shaped MP3 player.
  • 1 retractable Palm charger/hotsync cable from Ziplinq
  • 1 USB extension cable (yes yes, USB spec, for those who want to pedant)
  • 1 32MB flash drive, from before they were ubiquitous, containing among other things the genome for Drosophila Melanogaster
  • 1 Western Digital Passport 80GB portable USB hard drive
  • 1 US->UK telephone adaptor
  • 1 Palm Tungsten T PDA
  • (Occasionally) 1 Apple Newton 2000 PDA

The slightly less geeky

  • 1 Bic 4-colour biro
  • 2 packs Wrigley's Extra gum, 2 flavours
  • 5 testing Photonhunter business cards
  • 1 permanent marker for CDs etc
  • 1 copy of Insanely Great - The life and times of Macintosh, the computer that changed everything, by Steven Levy
  • 1 blank Oxford postcard, for emergencies
  • 1 chequebook
  • 1 wooly hat
  • 2 ziplock bags
  • 1 pair latex gloves (for impromptu bike maintenance, before you ask)
  • 1 Walkers freebie pedometer (not sure what that's doing in a cycle bag
  • 1 pad small (~1"*1.5") Postit notes, 1 pad medium (3"*6") Postit notes
  • 1 Lincoln College tie, for emergencies

There, wasn't that exciting?

I realised yesterday why a sudden braking manoeuvre on my bike resulted in an exciting 45-degree back-wheel-in-air stop - I had become too used to having a bag full of several kilos of crap on the back, weighing it down. :-)
