It looks like I've been volunteered for this meme by [livejournal.com profile] kimholding, so here goes. 10 things you might not have known about me.

1) I spent 6 months in La Jolla, California with my parents when I was about 6 years old. I had (nominally) a dog and a school uniform we only wore on Fridays. He was called Henry, and died of a fit while I was there. He was a beagle/whippet cross, born to my step-grandmother's whippet, called Pussy (no, really).
2) I used to learn the piano when I was young. Now I would dearly love to be any good at it, but I found it terribly hard going and didn't really get motivated at the time. This may or may not have been to do with my piano teacher's dog's noxious farts, but she did give me nice apple juice (her husband was a farmer).
3) My first driving experience was aged around 12, driving my dad's VW van and then later Golf GTI up and down Southport beach.
4) I tried taking up smoking off my own bat, with no peer pressure, while at university. Fortunately, I chose to start with Marlboro Reds, and just ended up feeling a bit ill. :-) I did smoke the occasional one after imbibing one or two alesh at parties, but also haven't done that for a long while
5) I've been considering a tattoo of late but am probably too wussy/indecisive to ever have it done.
6) I used to steal whiteboard pens from the boards at school.
7) The first CD album I bought was "Diamonds" by The Shadows. I had vinyl albums before that, but I'm not too sure which was my first - my cousin gave me all his Beatles albums as a set, it might well have been those.
8) I crashed my dad's VW-Porsche while I was living in Germany. Only a minor bump coming fairly slowly out of a very small roundabout with zebra crossings on the exits. Van in front stopped for someone crossing I didn't, and went into the back of the van.
9) I nearly acquired a family castoff Raleigh Chopper as a kid, but instead went for a similarly-castoff but much less valuable and cool Raleigh Fourteen.
10) I am emetophobic, but curiously it doesn't apply to our cats. Probably just as well. :-)

Why that particular tattoo? (Excuse my ignorance if it's something obvious)

It's the coat of arms for Waldhilsbach, which is the village we lived in in Germany. I've been back once since my parents moved back to the UK, but basically it's 'cos I miss the place. ;-)

Thought something like that (i.e. you were born or used to live there) was the case. How come you lived there? Parent(s) in the army?

Nah - parents worked there, though my dad was out in Germany before my mum and I joined her- in 1988 or so. They both worked at EMBL Heidelberg, and I went to the European School in Karlsruhe - though I also came back to England for quite a bit of my school career.

#10 - Interesting. The FAQ suggests I'd be described as 'careful' rather than 'phobic' - I don't think I've ever asked someone whether they throw up frequently on a first date, for example. But I do take a *very* dim view of people who get vomiting-drunk of their own free will, and I don't eat meat products from kebab vans :)

I don't tend to eat donner meat from kebab vans, but stuff which I can see being flame-grilled in front of me is usually fair game. Helps if I know the 'bab van beforehand of course, otherwise a jacket potato with cheese is always an option!

Chips, in my world. Or a veggie burger, which is only likely to acquire nastiness from outside (difficult on any kind of hot grill) rather than being full of it due to inadequate storage :) Mind you I have a couple of foul-tempered food intolerances too, so I don't often eat those - I can never tell if they'll have cheese or tomatoes in, neither of which I'm supposed to have in quantity.
